National Highways release details of ‘Road to Zero Harm Roadmap’

Eyes Up, Slow Down, Cross Safely

National Highways has released details of its ‘Road to Zero Harm Roadmap’, outlining its vision that no-one should be killed or seriously injured on the UK’s roads.

The roadmap sets out how the highways authority is working with partners to target the highest risks on the road network, prioritising actions based on where research suggests they will make the biggest difference to road safety.

It is adopting a Safe System approach, recognising that different partners are responsible for different parts of the system and that working together in a coordinated way is essential to reducing and ultimately eliminating deaths and serious injuries.

The key areas of focus identified are:

  • Making our roads and roadsides safer, including upgrading safety barriers, improving junctions and targeting higher-risk routes
  • Managing speeds so they better reflect how roads are designed and used, supported by improved tools and working with partners on compliance
  • Supporting safer vehicles, including encouraging the uptake of new safety technologies and working with partners to understand how they are used in real-world conditions
  • Helping road users stay safe, through targeted campaigns, better information and working with partners to tackle high-risk behaviours
  • Improving incident response, working with emergency services to make sure people get help as quickly and effectively as possible
  • Using better data, insight and innovation, so we can understand where risk is highest and continue to improve how we manage road safety over time.
