Children take on outer space for Walk to School week

Eyes Up, Slow Down, Cross Safely

Thousands of children across the UK have been heading ‘out of this world’ during Walk to School Week, as they discover and celebrate the benefits of active travel. Walk to School Week (19-23 May) took place during Living Streets’ National Walking Month each May, with this year’s campaign exploring a journey through outer space.

Families were encouraged to walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or ‘Park and Stride’ for the whole week to see the big differences that come from small steps, from healthier and happier children to fewer cars outside the school gates. This year’s challenge saw pupils take on The Great Space Walk, encouraging them to travel actively to school every day of the week. Meeting colourful intergalactic friends along the way, pupils learned about the important reasons to walk or wheel and its benefits for individuals, communities and the planet.

More than 250,000 pupils and more than 900 schools across the UK signed up to take part.

Tanya Braun, director of external affairs and fundraising, Living Streets said: “Walk to School Week is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to discover and celebrate the many benefits of walking to school.”
