The Road Safety Trust
The Road Safety Trust is the UK’s largest independent funder of road safety initiatives and research, supporting projects that make UK roads safer for all road users.
The Trust uses any surplus gifted by UKROEd (its not-for-profit trading subsidiary company) to help create safer roads and protect road users. As a small charity with low running costs, the vast majority of this income goes to support vital road safety studies and initiatives, through our grant programmes.
The Trust supports a variety of road safety initiatives through grants, with funding available towards projects that meet its grant criteria. Grants are available for up to two or three years and can range from £10,000 up to £200,000 depending on the funding round.

BikeSafe
Advanced police motorcyclists are amongst the safest and most skilled on our roads. Through BikeSafe, they share their skills and knowledge with their fellow ‘bike enthusiasts’ who recognise the value of post-test training.
Workshop participants learn how the skilled application of motorcycle roadcraft is crucial to being a safer and more skilled motorcyclist and, in doing so, help to reduce death and serious injury on our roads.

Acusensus
Acusensus is the world leader in distracted driving enforcement solutions, having invented, patented and delivered the world’s first operational solutions.
‘Heads Up’ is an innovative camera-based technology that has now been used by half of all UK police forces, with tens of thousands of cases of handheld mobile phone and seatbelt detections being processed. Tutelage
Operation Tutelage is a national, police-led programme delivered in partnership with all 45 UK police forces and key stakeholders to reduce the impact of uninsured, unsafe, untraceable, and untaxed vehicles on UK roads.
The programme adopts a procedurally just “nudge” approach, encouraging individuals who may be unintentionally uninsured to rectify their situation through targeted police-issued correspondence. Those who fail to take appropriate action effectively self-select for further attention, enabling forces to target resources more effectively towards higher-risk drivers and vehicles.
Since its inception, more than one million letters have been issued, with approximately 80% of recipients subsequently reinsuring their vehicles. Independent evaluation has demonstrated that individuals who receive a Tutelage letter are 4.4 times more likely to reinsure their vehicle than those who do not receive one.
Operation Tutelage is widely recognised as a successful example of policing innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based prevention. The programme forms a key component of the Department for Transport’s Road Safety Strategy and will continue to evolve through enhanced business process automation, predictive analytics, community intelligence, and broader intelligence enrichment capabilities.
